Derwent Valley League votes in bowling restriction rule

A NEW rule change, aiming to encourage younger bowlers, was voted in at last night’s Derwent Valley League Annual General Meeting.
The change to Rule 5a means that no bowler can bowl more than 12 overs - of the scheduled 40 overs.
The league put this alteration forward in order to get more players involved in matches, stopping teams from using just two bowlers and hopefully encouraging more bowlers for the future.
Several clubs voiced their concerns about the rule change, but the amendment was passed by 16 votes to 11 at the meeting, which was held at Ayton Sports Association.
The limits placed upon fast bowling junior players will still apply.
League secretary Bernard Goulding formally announced that division C side Wombleton had resigned from the league, but this bad news was soon forgotten as two new teams were voted in by the member clubs at the meeting.
Valley Bar Nomads, who will be run by former Oriel and Muston 2nds bowlers Jim Hunter and Dave Parkinson, and Nawton Grange 2nds were both unanimously voted into division C for the 2012 season.
The Nomads will be based at Oriel Crescent, as Commercial, who used to play there, resigned at the end of the 2011 campaign due to a lack of players.
Wombleton’s resignation came after the fixture lists had been confirmed, so division C clubs who were due to play against them will now have a blank Saturday - or Sunday - and will be awarded the full 20 points.
There was a minute’s silence held before the AGM for seven members of the cricketing fraternity who had passed away over the past 12 months - John Lockey, John Mohan, Reg Coward, Sid Bowes, Gordon Poole, Barry Dove and Carl Robinson.
Towards the end of the meeting, League president Ken Towse handed out the Merit Awards for the top bowlers, batsmen, fielders and wicket-keepers in each of the three divisions.
