Cooper's Hunmanby win

FINE,sunny weather attracted 46 players to the singles merit competition at Hunmanby Bowling Club, on Sunday, with 22 of the first game losers extending their day by entering a tea-and-biscuits consolation event.

In the quarter-finals of the main competition North Cliff's John Cooper beat Les Craggs (Eastfield) 21-20, Pete Thompson (Hunmanby) beat Steve Freer (Hunmanby) 21-20, Kevin Gates (Whitby) beat Phil Todd (Hunmanby) 21-14 and Geoff Watson (Whitby) beat Robert Child (North Cliff) 21-12.

On-form Cooper beat Thompson 21-16 in the semi-finals while Gates beat Watson 21-9. Cooper took the final honours 21-13 against Gates.

The quarter-finals of the consolation competition say Lee Deighton (Dukes Park) beat Barry Gosling (Borough) 21-18, Trevor Hirst beat Pauline Hirst 21-13, Ian Hadden (Eastfield) beat Jan Hadden 21-17 and Peter Hawkins (Westgate) beat Arthur Wilks (Eastfield) 21-16.

In the semis Deighton beat Hirst 21-17 while Hadden beat Hawkins 21-13. Teenager Deighton then went on to beat Hadden 21-17 in the final.

On Sunday there will be a drawn pairs competition at Dukes Park with a 9am start where the draw for the Winter Champion of Champions will also take place.

The final rankings for the champions' decider - calculated on performances in the winter merit competitions - are: 1 Geoff Watson, 26 points; 2 Kevin Gates, 18 points; 3 John Cooper, 15 points; 4 Alan Landers (Whitby), 14 points; 5 Russell Hipgrave (Dukes Park), 12 points; 6 Mick Gates (Borough), 9 points; joint 7 Harold Hill, Ron Marshall, David Lowe (all Dukes Park), and Dave Wilson (Westgate), all eight points; joint 11 Danny Cooper (North Cliff) and Terry Summersgill (Borough), both seven points; 13 Steve Bell (Borough); joint 14 Ian Richardson (Whitby) and Mick Dawson (Eastfield), 5 points; 16 Tom Mottram (Whitby), four points..
