Champion runs for Scarborough Athletic Club
The inter-girls race was one of the most competitive at the North Yorkshire Schools Cross-country Championships, with all the top finishers having won league races for their clubs during the current season.
Becky Mills, of Whitby Community College and Scarborough AC, matched strides with old rival Maddy Winzer of Hambleton Richmond team and Richmond and Zetland Harriers, until the final stages when Maddy prevailed to just shade Becky, who is the reigning Northern Counties silver medalist.
Whitby Community College provided the next two Scarborough scorers with Danni Braithwaite and Grace Rodgers, who were fourth and fifth. They will both join Becky in the English final.
Charlotte Edge of Fylinghall School and Scarborough AC came very close to being automatically selected to represent the county in the finals when finishing a close up seventh. She did however gain a place in the county team for the match with Durham, which may result in her achieving a place in the team for the finals.
She will be joined at Durham by Anna Gould of Ampleforth College who was eighth.
The team was completed by Emma Graves of Graham School and Scarborough AC who finished 27th, which helped to secure a notable team victory, well clear of Harrogate Craven, York, and Hambleton and Richmond teams.
Automatic selection for the English Schools final was achieved by two Scarborough Schools runners in the junior girls' race.
Bronwen Owen of Lady Lumley's School in Pickering ensured her selection when finishing third behind Katy Wood of York Schools and City of York AC - who won the Northern Championships the previous week - and Emma Megarry of Harrogate Craven and Wetherby AC, who is a top runner in the West Yorkshire League.
Lucy Schofield of Scalby School, who was the 2009 year seven champion, made a successful move up the age groups to finish in fifth and will therefore be joining her two older brothers Danny and Josh Schofield in the finals.
Jade Hutchinson of Ryedale School booked a place in the county match when coming 14th.
The Scarborough team which finished up in fourth place, was completed by Leah Millard of Graham Schools and Scarborough AC in 26th, with Manuella Legorretta and Freya Pratt, both of Ampleforth College, who were 33rd and 34th respectively.
There was also some notable performances in the junior boys' race when two Scarborough Schools runners achieved the required criteria to represent the county at the English finals.
Shane Hicks of Caedmon School and Loftus and Whitby AC finished second to Will Smith of Harrogate Craven Schools, who is a top runner in the West Yorkshire League with Keighley and Craven AC.
Will Spencer of Malton School was also selected after finishing up in sixth.
Bobby Scarborough of Graham and Scarborough AC finished 11th and was selected for the county match. The team, which finished up in third, was completed by Callam Booth of Caedmon in 21st, Alex Costa of Ampleforth in 24th, and Miles Locker of Caedmon in 24th.
The second highest team performance for Scarborough was by the year seven girls’ who finished runners-up behind Harrogate Craven.
While this age group does not compete in the English Schools Championships, the county team places were at stake and these were awarded to four members of the team - Charley Rodgers of Caedmon School who was sixth, Leah Ogden of Graham School in eighth, Jace Cappleman of Graham who was ninth, and Rebecca Hewison of Eskdale School who was 11th.
Izzy Mastrolonardo and Tori Hide, both of Eskdale School completed the scoring team in 19th and 20th.
The year seven boys’ team were unable to match their girl counterparts and had to settle for fourth place.
The squad was led home by Jacob Codling of Scalby who finished up in eighth and was selected for the county match.
Sam Cullen of the George Pindar Sports College was next to finish in 17th and was followed home by Jay Kilpatrick of Eskdale School in 24th and Liam Dawson of Ryedale who was 27th.
Michael Todd of St Augustine’s was 32nd and Matt Butler of Rydedale completed the scoring team in 33rd.
As was the case in the senior boys race, Scarborough were unable to field a complete senior girls squad but all three of the team achieved selection for the county.
Keziah Paxton of Norton College and Thirsk and Sowerby AC was the runner-up behind Steph Allison of Hambleton and Richmond Schools and Middlesborouh Mandale AC, and will be representing the county at the English Schools finals.
Rachel Gyte and Kayleigh Edge, who are both from Scarborough Sixth Form College and Scarborough AC, finished eighth and 10th and were selected for the county match
