Big-hitters line up for Staxton sixes

STAXTON'S annual six-a-side cricket tournament will take place this Sunday, and the big hitters in town are gearing up to clear the boundary rope.

The tournament usually attracts a crowd of over 300 people and the village club will be hoping for a bumper turn out again this year.

Twelve teams will yet again take part in the tournament, with four groups made up of three teams.

Last year's winners Ebberston will be in group C alongside Paul Marton's Scalby and Brompton.

Ebberston's Eddie Craggs and Adie and Matty Turnbull will be the key men for the holders. Scalby will need big performances from all rounders Jon Barton, Paul Hesp and Connor Carson if they are to progress.

Former Scarborough pace man Tom Pateman will be key to Brompton's performance.

In group A, Dave Morris' Forge Valley will tackle Ganton and Cayton. Ganton will be relying on their big hitter Rob Gretton while Cayton's Paul Woodhead will be looking to do some damage with both bat and ball.

Group B is made up of Hunmanby, Flixton and Wykeham. Flixton will be strong favourites to progress from their group and they will be looking to Neil and Ben Elvidge to fire.

Hunmanby's veteran skipper Andy Ringrose and his son Nick will be looking to make their mark, while Wykeham's lofty bowler Dave Pearson will want to take plenty of wickets to seal success for his side.

Group D sees Snainton, Heslerton and Cloughton battle it out to progress.

Heslerton have been in impressive form in Beckett Division A this season and will be looking to Australian all-rounder Anthony Scott, powerful batsman Sam Triffitt and left arm pace bowler Kristian Wilkinson to see them through.

Cloughton batsman Ben Luntley will be the key man for the village outfit while Snainton will need Dave Bell to be on top form if they are to have a chance of progressing.

This year's tournament will be played in memory of the late Bill Hopper, the former Staxton president who sadly passed away in April this year.

Current president Edwin Cooper will be dishing out the trophies to the victors.

Staxton's James Armstrong said: "Bill sadly passed away in April and this year's tournament will be played in his memory.

"Our new president Edwin Cooper would like to invite all Bill's guests along to this year's event.

"Ebberston won it last year and they will have to be favourites again, but it will depend on what kind of side Flixton turn up with as well. Heslerton have a strong side as well and they will challenge."

There will be a barbecue, stalls, sweets and the bar will be open throughout the event, which gets under way at 10.15am with Forge Valley against Ganton.
