Athletic aces net last-gasp draw

SCARBOROUGH Athletic maintained an unbeaten start to pre-season life thanks to a late charge at Northallerton Town.

Brian France's men had fallen two goals behind, but after a half-time ear-bashing, they earned a creditable 2-2 draw.

Athletic were 2-0 down after a poor first half, handing Anthony Hulme and Dan Hawkings openings, which they duly took.

It was 21-year-old Shaun Chadburn who scored the club's first-ever goal after 84 minutes. Then the same player set up Scott Phillips for an 87th minute leveller.

A delighted France explained: "Shaun has been pestering me, saying he can do it. I gave him a go and he changed the game. In future he can pester me all he wants.

"After watching the last 20 minutes, I am very excited about the new season.

"We were very poor in the first half, but I had a word or two at the break, asking if the lads actually wanted to play for the club, and things improved massively.

"It was tough as we were without five players, but the lads out there did show me that they can battle."

Among the squad were ex-Saturday League aces Jon Hyde, Dave Bell, Baz Gill, Ryan Merron, Martyn Ferrey and impressive second-half sub Lee Cappleman.
