Weather problems fail to spoil regatta

Despite a poor weather forecast, 139 boats entered the two-day Filey Sailing Club Regatta, putting this important event back on the map.
The success of this regatta erased the disappointment of the cancelled 2007 regatta.
In all, eight fleets and two general handicap fleets competed on the water despite the wet weather leading up to the regatta, and also the less than favourable wind forecast for the weekend.
Filey Race officers James Whitehead and veteran Peter Crooks, supported by their teams of safety crews, had a torrid time on the water, planning the schedule of races in light and shifting winds.
Despite this they ran three and two races on Saturday and managed to hold two and three races on Sunday – having to abandon their last race on Sunday due to not enough wind strength.
Amy Cartwright, who now lives on the south coast but learned to sail at Filey, won the windward leeward course handicap fleet.
Prizegiving was performed in the club marquee after the event.
Filey Club Commodore Paul Tyndall was assisted by Mayor of Filey, Cllr Marion Wright, who spoke of the value to Filey gained from the regatta, in terms of visitors and the impact the large number of boats provide in the bay.
l Anyone wanting more information on Filey SC should log on to www.fileysc.org.uk or call at the clubhouse at Arndale landing on most Sundays.
