CRICKETER Adam Lyth has capped a great year by picking up the Evening News- sponsored top male achiever trophy at last night's Scarborough and District Sports Council awards.
Lyth, 21, burst onto the scene with Yorkshire this year, cementing his place in both the county championship and limited over sides, all of which earned him a new three-year deal with the Tykes.
The Whitby-born left-hander played 14 LV County Championship matches, scoring 645 runs, including a maiden century – 132 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in July.
He also represented Yorkshire Carnegie in 16 one-day matches in 2008 and won the Young Player of the Year Award for his season's exploits.
Lyth has a busy winter ahead of him. He will spend three months in South Australia playing grade cricket in Adelaide as part of the ECB’s Scholarship Programme before rejoining the Yorkshire squad in the UAE for the pre-season tour.
The top female achiever award has gone to 24-year-old Jenna Wheatman of Scarborough Athletic Club.
Jenna, who is now competing as a senior athlete after leaving the under-23 ranks last year, has represented Scarborough and Yorkshire in the hammer, in which she is ranked at number one in the county.
She was a silver medalist in the 2008 Yorkshire Championships and won bronze in the Northern Counties Championships.
Scarborough’s record hammer thrower, Jenna is also an excellent all-rounder, and has competed in the 100m hurdles, javelin, long jump, shot, triple jump and the 400m relay. She also helps out with junior coaching.
Last night’s awards at The Spa were presented by Ganton’s international golfer Naomi Edwards and Scarborough Mayor Cllr Eileen Vickers.
