SCARBOROUGH coach and director of British swimming Sam Greetham believes there will be even more pressure on the host country's stars to perform when the Olympic Games comes to London in 2012.
This summer’s Games in Beijing saw Great Britain claim their biggest medal haul of all time.

And Greetham, along with all those involved with the Great Britain team, are already getting ready for the London event.

He said: “Beijing was amazing and the team performed even better than expected and to get so many medals was an unbelievable achievement.

“With the Games being held here in four years time the anticipation is already starting to build and we want to achieve even more.

“The thing now is that because of the success in Beijing and the fact we are hosting the games in 2012, the pressure will internsify on everyone involved and we have try and make sure we do everything to focus on getting the preparation spot on.”

Greetham was part of the team that achieved GB’s biggest medal haul in the past 100 years finishing fourth overall in the medal table with 19 golds, 13 silvers and 15 bronze.

Six of those medals came in swimming, something which was an added bonus for Greetham.

He said: “To do so well in the swimming meant a lot to me personally and we were excellent as a group.

“Rebecca Adlington was the icing on the cake with her two gold medals in the 800m and 400m freestyle.

“She is a superb example to all youngsters of what can be achieved and I am sure she will be one of the favourites for London and everyone will be looking forward to seeing her.

“She is a northern lass too from Mansfield, so I am even happier about that.

“Working with these athletes is an absolute privilege and to be able to see them compete and win medals is extremely rewarding.”

Scarborough born and bred, Greetham is also keeping his fingers crossed that the town may have its own olympic medal winner in 2012 and is tipping rower Bob Hewitt to meet the challenge.

Greetham said: “Scarborough has never had a successful olympian, it would be amazing to see one and Bob is doing very well.

“He is training full-time now with the academy and has been involved with a few internationals. There is a magnificent opportunity there for him and I wish the lad all the best.”
