THE fourth Scarborough Rugby Union Club reunion of past players will be the last one before the Newby men move from the Showground.
The club are heading to their brand new multi-purpose sports facility in January and for many attending it will be the final chance to take in some much-loved memories.

The event will take place on Friday September 5 and will include a tag rugby tournament and a reception in the clubhouse.

Organiser Barry Beanland said: “This is the fourth of these reunions and I am so pleased with how successful they have been.

“It is strange to think that the current ground will not be there next year and I and the others attending will be taking in the memories and talking about the old times before the big move.

“For example, if you look back to the club’s team picture from the 1952/53 season (top left) you can see houses in the background.

“That was because the pitch used to be the other way round, facing Scalby Road, and after that campaign the switch was made to how the ground lookss now.

“From that side came one of the club’s top scorers, John Swift, who managed 596 points from 164 games.

“And in the 1961/62 side (also pictured left) John Oxley managed a fine 630 points from 273 games, which is some effort.

“They were terrific players and a credit to the club, and these kind of memories will never be forgotten even though it is a new era for the club starting in 2009.”

Barry started playing for Scarborough in the 1961/62 season and has been involved ever since, picking up a life membership achievement in 2005.

“The club have been a major part of my life. I am proud to be associated with it and the future is very exciting.

“The 1960s were when we really started to emerge and to do well on a consistent basis and that was the opportunity for the club to progress even further.

“Unfortunately many old friends and associates have passed away but nobody is forgotten and these reunions have proven to be a fantastic way of getting people together.”

The first took place in 2004 and since then lots of former players have attended on a regular basis.

Beanland said: “We have attracted around 200 for each of the reunions which is very impressive and there are sometimes one or two surprises. Hopefully, we can continue when we move to the new ground because it is going to be a magnificent facility for all to enjoy.”
