Eastfield ease relegation fears

EASTFIELD A hit the victory trail in their last two games in the crown green Saturday League division one to ease away from the relegation zone.
An 11-3 success came at the expense of Borough B when Les Craggs 21-6 and Mick Carter 21-8 had the best returns on their home turf, while Lynn Gates 21-10 was Borough’s best.

The previous week Eastfield had a 9-5 return when they played Westgate A
, again at the Strongwood green.

Best returns on this occasion were by Mick Dawson 21-5 and Steven Hugill 21-8 for Eastfield and by Shirley Dolphin 21-7 for Westgate.

North Cliff A dropped points when away to Bridlington Bay A, the 12 games being shared but Bay taking an 8-6 victory with a 226-210 aggregate advantage.

Best results were by Dave Cruddas 21-11 and Tony Hatton 21-12 for Bay and by John Coper, Geoff Watson and Steve Price, all 21-15, for Cliff.

Dukes Park A were too strong for North Cliff B at the Alexandra Gardens and claimed a 13-2 win with three of their players having single figure successes, Ron Marshall 21-4 and Brian McGrail and Billy Holdsworth, both 21-9. The Tysons - Mike 21-3 and Mary 21-17 - gained the Cliff points.

Over-60s League division one action saw champions North Cliff No 1 gain another maximum 14-0 success, at home to Whitby No 1.

The biggest contributions to Cliff’s 163-68 aggregate score came from Derrick swift and Tom Chalmers 36-7 and Sonnie Howard and John Cooper 31-10.

Taking five of the eight games in their Evening Singles League division one match gave Eastfield No 2 a 159-113 success at home to Bridlington Bay No 4.

Irene Haddon 21-3 and Shirley Groves 21-4 hit top form for Eastfield while C Farrington 21-16 was Bay’s best.

At home to Hunmanby No 1 and winning six of the eight games gave North Cliff No 1 a 149-131 success.

John Cooper 21-10 for Cliff and Phil Todd 21-11 for Hunmanby had the best returns.

Borough No 2 had no trouble away to Hunmanby No 2 in the Evening Doubles League and collected an 84-33 maximum success with John Purdy and Gerry Stafford 21-3 their big winners.

The Knockout Cup has reached the semi-final stages, which are played on neutral greens and in which Borough No 1 met Bridlington Bay No 1 at Hunmanby on Wednesday and North Cliff No 1 will meet Bridlington Bay No 2 at Eastfield next Wednesday, 6.30pm start.

Next Friday sees the Borough Over-60s Singles Merit with a 10am start and Sunday the East Yorkshire Singles Merit will be held at Westgate, also with a 10am start.

l Latest qualifiers for the Gambart Baines Challenge Cup finals were B Connelly (Pilkington), who beat C Rice (Pilkington) 21-17 and N Crawshaw (Bradfield, Sheffield) who beat S Lonnia (Bradfield) 21-20.
