IT'S BECOMING a very unfortunate habit - Scarborough Athletic creating countless chances but finishing as losers.
That's what happened at Shirebrook on Saturday when the home side hit a quick-fire four goals in a 20-minute spell at the start of the second half to wipe out Boro's 2-0 lead and win the NCEL premier game 4-3.
Boro's plans were hit with the unavailability of new signing Mike Price, Duane Grace, Joel Hartley, Danny Farthing and Richard Medcalf.
Paul Routledge came in for only his second start of the season and he put Boro ahead on 10 minutes.
Dave Hartas swung in a free-kick which Rob Ellis headed on, and Routledge pounced for his first of the season.
The home side rarely attacked as Boro poured forward with a style which belied the terrible blustery conditions.
Craig Hogg and Dave Hartas both forced home keeper Mark Frost into action with headers that the custodian pushed over.
Then Scott Phillips shot from distance and from the resulting corner Dave Kemp's header was deflected over. Ryan Blott then got in on the act with two efforts which Frost also saved.
But Boro's pressure told when just before the break Hogg headed in Miller's superb corner to give Boro a comfortable 2-0 advantage at half-time.
It was staggering that just 20 minutes later the home side had a 4-2 lead as Boro's defending ability seemed to have been discarded along with the orange peel, although Shirebrook's first goal had a large slice of luck.
Boro's players stopped when a through-ball headed towards Pete Stubley who was in an offside position. He left the ball to run through and with Boro's players expecting the game to be pulled back, Craig Wilson ran on to round Arran Reid and slot home.
This gave the home side an amazing boost of confidence which was devoid in the first half, although Hogg screwed a shot wide and Blott nearly scored direct from a free-kick - Frost saving the latter wonderfully.
It was Wilson who struck the equaliser with his long-range effort slipping through Reid's hands and into the net.
The home striker then robbed Kemp of the ball on the left and crossed for Dominic Jones to easily score the third.
A shell-shocked Brian France tried to spark Boro back to life by pushing Miller to left-wing, with Craig Evans replacing Routledge.
But the home side - who had scored just 14 goals in 16 games before Saturday - notched a fourth when Danny Moore allowed a ball to drop in the area and Chris Rhodes scored an easy tap-in.
Boro now had to do something quick to have any chance of saving something from the match, but instead resorted to petulant back-chat and loss of control which led to five bookings.
Blott and Griffin combined to play Hogg in for his second with four minutes left, but it was too little too late as the hosts celebrated a fourth win of the season.
