Forty years ago, on May 7, a double fishing boat tragedy occurred under the cliffs at Flamborough.

Seven people lost their lives that day in one of the worst fishing boat tragedies in the maritime history of the village, a day which will never be forgotten and commemorated each year.

Peter Brigham, Guy Brigham, Robert George Gray and Barrie Shilton of the 36ft coble Carole Sandra died in the tragedy, along with David Bunting, Stephen Burton and Brian Charles Priestley, who were lost from North Wind III.

A memorial stone was erected in Chapel Street, Flamborough by the village’s parish council and put in place by May Day the following year to remember those lost in the incident.

It is situated on the same site as the monument which commemorates the six Flamborough fishermen lost off the West Scar in the double fishing coble tragedy of 1909.

Flamborough Lifeboat crew members will lay a wreath at sea on Sunday, May 5 this year.

A short commemorative service will also be held in Cameron's Gardens, Flamborough, adjacent to the memorial stone, on Tuesday, May 7.

Wreaths will be laid by representatives of the Flamborough Parish Council, the Flamborough Fishermen's Memorial Group, HM Coastguard, Filey RNLI, Flamborough RNLI and Julie Toft (sister of Brian Charles Priestley).

The service will commence at 10am.
