Woodend is complete - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

SCARBOROUGH'S new £4.8 million Woodend centre is finally completed.

The keys to the former museum, once owned by the Sitwell family, are due to be handed over to its management team today.

The building will now be known as Woodend Creative Workspace.

A two-year refurbishment programme has resulted in 54 studio office units, nine artists' studios, an incubator unit comprised of one and two-person workstations and a public exhibitions area complete with conference and meeting rooms.

The centre will eventually become home for up to 200 creative entrepreneurs from the Scarborough area.

A spokesman said: "Over half the building has been let prior to opening with around 20 businesses and individuals reserving space. Taking possession of they keys means we can now begin helping the tenants move in and finalise our plans for future marketing."

Objects displayed at the former Woodend Museum will continue to be stored at the centre and will be open for public viewing by appointment.

The house was the birthplace of Edith Sitwell in 1887 and played a strong role in the literary lives of Osbert, Edith and Sacheverell, until it was bought by the local authority in 1934.
