Wonders of science brought to classroom
PUPILS from two Scarborough schools enjoyed some scientific fun after taking part in an experiment workshop.
The Year Three and Year Six youngsters from Newby and Scalby Primary School and students from Scalby School were treated to a visit from the Magna Science Adventure Centre who gave a demonstration of their Kitchen Sink Show.
The event, held at Scalby School, featured a number of experiments children could carry out with items from around the home, including how to create explosions by mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar together and by dropping mints into a bottle of cola.
Scalby School technology teacher Diana Hammond said the workshop had been a great success and believed the children had gained a lot from the day.
She said: “It was absolutely fantastic and formed part of our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths after-school club, which is run by Tamsyn Jones and is really popular with our students.
“Our Year Seven children who had put the most effort in on their grades were also allowed to take part and they really enjoyed it.”
Newby and Scalby Primary School teacher Paul Davidson added: “The children were incredibly enthused by it all and a lot of them went home and tried out the experiments.
“It was a very good day, showing how science was everywhere, and we are hoping to take some of what the children learned on the day forward for the rest of the year.”
