AN HISTORIC Scarborough sporting pavilion on the site of a proposed housing development has been awarded listed building status.
The near-century-old tennis pavilion at Filey Road Sports and Tennis Centre has been given Grade II listing by English Heritage.
Members of the centre’s Health and Fun Committee applied for the listing after it was announced the centre, along with the Seamer Road football stadium, would be sold off to help fund the proposed sports village at the former Weaponness Valley Park and Ride site.
The listing means if plans to turn the centre into a housing development are approved, the pavilion will almost certainly remain.
Chris Bourne, Scarborough Borough Council’s Projects Manager, said the council had expected the committee to apply for listing and the news wouldn’t affect plans for either site.

He added: “We did anticipate the listed status and the original planning brief made it clear that there’s a need to retain the existing building. All the bidders took this into account when putting together their proposals.”
If the proposals go ahead, Scarborough Civic Society Chairman Adrian Perry believes the pavilion could be used as something such as a community centre. And he still hopes the council will have a u-turn, and that the pavilion, which has hosted legends such as Fred Perry, will still be used for its original purpose.
He said: “This should be the sports centre for Scarborough. If they want to build a football ground that’s one thing but they have beautiful tennis courts and facilities already in place.
“The council say that there are issues with the showers and bathrooms, but when I have a problem with that in my house I just call a plumber to fix it. I don’t knock my house down.
“The council don’t advertise that the centre is there, and they don’t market it well enough, which is a shame as it has everything that the town really needs already.”

Friday, November 25, 2011 at 01:35 PMIt's great news; I must admit to being a little uncomfortable at the area being developed for housing but at least we will have a football stadium and this building will be saved.....

Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 07:28 PMI am absolutely delighted at this news! I love that building and the whole tennis court area. It used to look a bit like a mini Wimbledon with its Virginia Creeper covered red brick walls and green and white paint work. The court nearest to Filey Road was the Centre Court and looked fantastic but it was allowed to fall into disrepair as happens to everything good about this town that the council want an excuse to get rid of. Cliff lifts, North Side, Futurist etc etc. It should have some money spent on it now and be brought back to the splendid facility it once was instead of wasting OUR money on White Elephants like Open Air Theatre and blocks of flats we don't want. No doubt the freehold will be sold to Benchmark for next to nothing (the ground rents on the Sands flats alone will pay them back the money they pay for the freehold in a year!) or Tesco will surround it with a big ugly hyper market and don't even mention the fact that Tesco have stopped supporting the Cancer Run for Life in favour of the London Gay Pride carnival! Livid about that.

Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 06:39 PMHere's an idea. Get the developer to improve and expand the sports centre, build a football ground where it should be, i.e. seamer road, then build as many houses as they want at weaponness to sell for covering the other costs plus profit. Simples!

Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 06:06 PMIt is a really nice old building, but whether it will look as impressive surrounded by Benidorm flats I'm not so sure. Still, a rare victory for the town's hertiage over the asset-strippers.

Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 04:38 PMThis is another positive for the development of sports in the town. With the structure now having listed status it only enhances its and its surroundings development potential. clearly the current building is too much for the council to maintain in its curent role but in the hands of a developer and with the discipline of an English heritage listing then the future is secure for this fine building. Tennis in the town ( and many other sports) can then fully exploit the opportunities on offer at the proposed development at Weaponess. Modern, state of the art playing and changing facilities will enable the cream of local players to devlop to thier potential alongside those recreational players who derive so much pleasure from participation in a wide range of sports of which i m sure Tennis will be at the fore front.

Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 04:11 PMExcellent news! As a regular at the gym there I have always felt that the building is rather special and need preserving, and why not as the Sports centre? It has reasonable facilities which could be really good, tennis courts which would not take a lot of upgrading, but, of course, it's on a rather nice (equals expensive) plot of land, and we know that this council will sell off anything to their friends if there's something in it for them, but it's a bit more difficult now. well done the Civic Society!
