What a lot in the bottle for children's hospice
A SCARBOROUGH man proved he was a cut above the rest by guessing how many 5ps were in a charity competition.
Ian McLeod, of Burniston, guessed that a whisky bottle at Headers barbers in Aberdeen Walk contained exactly 60.
The contest was held in aid of Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa, which is Scarborough’s nearest children’s hospice.
The retired engraver, who won a free haircut, said: “I couldn’t believe it! I was really pleased to win and it’s a good organisation to support.”
The bottle full of 5ps was donated by customer Rodney Gill, of Elmville Avenue, after he read in the Evening News that staff were collecting for Martin House.
He said: “I’d had it full and on the shelf for ages – I thought it might as well do some good!”
The competition raised a total of 102.50 for the charity, which provides care and support for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.
Martin House fundraiser George Sowersby said: “I would like to thank all the helpers and the general public for all their support in the past year. Their support means so much to our hospice.”
In the past year the Scarborough Friends of Martin House group has raised 57,000. The hospice costs 4 million a year to run and only receives seven per cent of its funding from the primary care trust.
Staff at Headers are still collecting 5ps for the hospice if anyone wishes to help the cause.
