Weather station a matter of pride
An antique weather station that used to stand next to the town hall is now back in working order, thanks to the Scarborough and District Civic Society.
Unveiling the newly-renovated unit, Adrian Perry, Chairman of Scarborough & District Civic Society, said: "The unit was gifted to the town by a past mayor, and I think it deserves pride of place down here on Sandside next to another iconic structure, our Tardis policebox.
"The Harbourmaster Captain Willis and his team have agreed to try to keep the board up-dated, and people will be able to get meteorological observations about the tides, sunny hours, temperature and barometric pressure."
Mr Perry also thanked Karen Snowden of Scarborough Museums Trust for taking good care of the weather station since its removal from the St Nicholas Gardens in 2002. It has now been meticulously cleaned, re-glazed and conserved by volunteers.
After the unveiling Mr Perry said: "So many people came up to say how glad they were to see the weather station again - it seems that it has a lot of friends! I'm sure there will many people making use of it now that it's back on display and working again."
