THE current severe rainfall is causing chaos in Scarborough and the surrounding areas.
Firefighters have been called to Scalby where at least a dozen homes have been flooded.
A major search operation is under way at Hartoft, near Pickering after a 4x4 vehicle went into a rain-swollen river and became submerged under a bridge.
An RAF helicopter and emergency services are currently at the scene at Muffles Bridge.
It is believed the vehicle was crossing a ford but it is not yet known what has happened to the occupants.
Searches are currently being conducted along the river, a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said.
Inquiries are ongoing to identify the owner of the vehicle and the police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
In Scarborough the heavy rainfall is continuing to cause major problems.
Fire crews are helping people in Scalby and Cloughton as properties become flooded.
Both Hackness Road and North Street were closed off by Scarborough Council officials.
Peasholm lake also burst its banks causing flooding at Peasholm roundabout.
Officers closed off the road between Killerby and the Boak End roundabout, near Lebberston, due to flooding which became a problem at about lunchtime. A spokeswoman said it was particularly bad at the Killerby end and traffic was being diverted.
The worst affected areas included Quarry Road in Burniston, the bottom of Barmoor Lane and North Street in Scalby and the junction of Hackness Road and Moor Lane nearby.
