Wearing her heart on her book sleeve
SHOWBUSINESS came to the literature festival in the form of former TV and film actress Carol Drinkwater.
She may no longer grace our screens but Drinkwater, who will always be known in this part of the world for All Creatures Great and Small, still has star quality.
Her talk on her Olive Farm book series was a one-woman sow – with humour, celebrity gossip, star name-dropping, love, compassion, grief, religious hatred, tavel and ... oh, yes ... olive tree cultivation.
This was about much more than writing – it was about one woman's journey through her middle years – romance, marriage, miscarriage, estrangement, renewal and rebirth.
It was never less than honest and heartwarming.
Carol Drinkwater gave the capacity audience of herself, her very essence, what makes her happy and desolate.
And Scarborough loved her for it. Some felt she was talking to them as individuals and were visibly moved as she talked about her dark days, cheered at her successes, and laughed with her at herself and anecdotes.
Drinkwater could have gone on all afternoon – as indeed she offered – and we would all have let her, too. Bravo, darling.
