'We can't wait to relive the 80s!'

SCARBORIANS of a certain age have given a big thumbs up to the line up performing in this summer's 80s extravaganza at the town's newly refurbished Open Air Theatre.

Bosses at entertainment group Apollo Leisure announced that a concert – 80s Rewind – featuring pop stars from that decade would take place on July 31 as part of the celebrations to mark the reopening of the venue.

Former hitmakers Boy George, T’Pau, Rick Astley, Paul Young, Nik Kershaw, Midge Ure, Heaven 17, Kid Creole, Hazel O’Connor and Toyah, who have more than 70 top 20 hits under their belts between them, will grace the stage.

And on the streets of Scarborough for townsfolk who grew up in the 80s, nostalgia for the days of the school disco is top of the pops.

Sarah Bowman, aged 38, who lives in Pavilion Square, said: “I liked T’Pau and I really liked Culture Club so I’m glad Boy George is playing. I never saw any of them live – but with them all playing on the same night it’s really good value for money, I really might go along.”

Clive Haviland, 40, who works in Scarborough Music on Aberdeen Walk, said: “There are big names from the past, and it’s an impressive line-up – I think T’Pau were my favourite out of the lot of them. I think it’s good for Scarborough and will bring a lot of people to town. I’m thinking of going myself.”

Steve Hart, 54, of North Marine Road, said: “The 80s are my era really – I really liked Paul Young and Rick Astley. I remember them all – and I like a bit of karaoke so I wouldn’t mind getting up on stage and singing along!”

Julia Jameson, aged 49 from Bridlington, said: “It’s a really good line-up. I didn’t see any of them when they were big but I’d have really liked to have done – I did see Ian Dury and the Thompson Twins though. There’s every chance I’ll go along and see what I missed 20 years ago!”

Amanda Mortimer, 38, who lives in Dovedale said: “It’s definitely the sort of thing I’d go to. I was a big T’Pau fan – she had lovely hair! I like Midge Ure and Rick Astley too. I’ve got a lot of memories of dancing to this stuff at school disco – mainly the 80s were all vivid colours and big hair weren’t they?
