Warning over Spanish lottery scam

RESIDENTS in the Scar-borough area have been urged to be on alert against lottery scams, especially targeting the elderly.

The warning, from the county council Trading Standards watchdogs follows incidents of elderly people being ripped off by conmen. One Whitby pensioner is believed to have lost 500,000 over a number of years while another, from the Stokesley area, lost around 55,000.

The latest scam relates to a series of letters and phone calls from Spain. The caller advised the pensioner that she had won a prize in the Spanish Primitiva Lottery even though she had not entered it.

“Whilst the El Gordo lottery is genuine, a number of scam operators are leading people to believe that they have won a prize in the Primativa Lottery,” said a spokesperson.

“In order to claim the prize an up front fee has to be paid.”
