A SCARBOROUGH man has made a desperate plea for dog owners to keep their animals on a lead after his pet was attacked.

Terry Jones issued the appeal after Bully, a three-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, was left with cuts to his mouth and head and a swollen jaw after being bitten by another dog.

Mr Jones, of South Cliff, who said Bully was “terrified” after his ordeal, feared a child could be injured if owners do not take heed of his warning.

Mr Jones was walking Bully in Regent Street when another Staffordshire bull terrier appeared.

He said: “I took Bully out on a lead and the next thing this other dog came along.

“I come every day to walk him and we go all over the area.

“However, on this occasion the other dog came from nowhere and Bully was left with his injuries.

“My real worry is that a dog could attack a child in the future.

“I do not want anyone else to get hurt but the next time it could be a child and not a dog.

“The onus is on owners to look after their dogs properly.

“All Staffordshire bull terriers should be on a lead or muzzled.”

Mr Jones, who works as a decorator, looks after Bully for a friend, and said the pair share a great bond.

He revealed it was the second time his four-legged friend had been hurt by a dog in the past four months.

However, despite his injuries, Mr Jones didn’t take Bully to the vets for treatment and bathed him at home to try to calm the shaken dog down.

But he said Bully, who is also the mascot for the Indigo Alley pub, in North Marine Road, was still taking time to recover from his ordeal.

He added: “He is normally such a happy and excitable dog around everyone.

“But when this happened he was frightened to death and shaking like a leaf.

“He is not 100 per cent and still terrified when he goes out of the house.

“But he is so gentle and doesn’t bark or bite.

“The people in the pub absolutely love him too.”

I am sorry - but I take offense to the remark “All Staffordshire bull terriers should be on a lead or muzzled.” It is awful that this happened - but it has nothing to do with the breed. I have a staffy and she is the softest dog I have ever known. She has been attacked by another dog on the beach and didn’t react at all. Walking along any streets she would of course be on a lead - because it is sensible dog ownership regardless of breed. But on the beach, or in fields etc, there is absolutely no reason why I would keep her on the lead. She comes back to us immediately when called, and has never shown any aggression towards another dog...because we have trained her properly, like responsible dog owners. This is not about breed, this is about owners and their responsibility. Stop giving staffys a bad name - they can make adorable pets and historically are known as the 'nanny' dog because they are so good with children. My dog was attacked last week by a Staffy cross breed, and my dog was on a lead. This is the third time a dog with this breeding has attacked my dog, I have been amazed by the number of people who let their animals run loose where other dogs are, then expect me to put my dog on its lead because theirs is unfriendly! Something needs to be done about irresponsible dog owners in this town, and soon!
