MORE than £3,000 was raised for a military charity following a charity auction at Scarborough Rugby Club.

The cash was raised for Help For Heroes and will be used by a new rehabilitation centre for injured soldiers at Catterick Garrison.

It was organised by Nigel Salt as well as Steve and Jeanette McNamara and was so successful that a similar event has been organised for next year which they promise will be bigger and better than ever.

Nigel said that a Scarborough soldier who lost both legs in an explosion while on foot patrol in Afghanistan, Tom Lawlor from Barrowcliff, had proved an inspiration for the event for the courage he had shown during his recovery.

He added: “The lads that are injured at the moment are having to travel down to Henley in the south of England for their treatment..”

Nigel said that Tom, who is a Liverpool fan, had successfully bid for a signed Middlesbrough shirt. “The lad that saved his life is a big Middlesbrough fan and he bought it for him.”

Some of the lots which were up for grabs included an England goalkeepers top signed by David Seaman, a Scarborough Athletic shirt signed by the team, a round of golf for four people at North Cliff Golf Club and a meat voucher from Glaves Butchers. The final total raised on the night was around £3,350.

Nigel said that Dave Marsden acted as the compere for the event had asked to be more involved with the organisation of next year’s event which will take place on Saturday, February 9, 2013.
