Tributes for battler Ellie - ADD YOUR OWN TRIBUTE

A Scarborough teenager who has battled cancer for the past three years has tragically lost the fight.

Ellie Othick-Bowmaker, 14, from Newby, passed away surrounded by her family at Martin House Children's Hospice, in Boston Spa near Wetherby.

Ellie, who went to Scalby School, has been fighting cancer since 2007 and has undergone many hours of treatment including chemotherapy.

Her mother Heather, told the Evening News: "We took her to the hospice last Wednesday. It was the third time in as many weeks. She passed away in the early hours of Valentine's Day surrounded by hearts and flowers."

Mrs Othick said Ellie wanted to donate her organs however doctors have said this isn't possible due to her cancer.

Mrs Othick said: "It was something we had discussed and is something that she wanted. She particularly wanted to donate her heart but unfortunately it can't happen because of her cancer. That's why her passing away on Valentine's Day is quite poignant."

Mrs Othick said she has been overwhelmed by the support and good wishes from friends and family.

She said: "I have received over a hundred texts and I have been told a lot of people have been leaving messages on Facebook. I want to thank everyone for their kind words and support."

Since being diagnosed with cancer, Ellie has raised thousands of pounds for charity, by holding a number of fundraising events. She organised events last year including a sponsored bike ride, head shave and cake sale, which raised nearly 10,000 for children's charities. In December last year she raised 2,000 for children's brain tumour charity Ali's Dream by releasing a charity CD. On the CD Ellie perform's a song called Butterfly Wings which was written for her by her uncle Glenn Coggin.

* The CD is priced at 5 and is available to buy at the Evening News reception, in Aberdeen Walk, Scarborough. Sign the condolence messages – on our website.
