Tragic husband is woken from coma
THE 44-YEAR-OLD man who was in a head-on motorcycle collision which killed his wife has woken from his coma.
Paul and Gillian Slone, of Filey, were just three days in to their 10-day motorcycle tour of Germany and Austria when they were involved in the crash near Offenburg on June 13.
Mrs Slone, 41, died at the scene of the accident while Mr Slone, 44, was placed in coma due to the severity of his injuries.
This week Mr Slone, who works at Raflatac in Eastfield, was taken off life support, and the medication which kept him in the induced coma was withdrawn.
His doctor at the Klinikum Offenburg, Dr Engelhardt, has said there was a long way to go yet, probably many months, but things were "looking good so far".
Richard Hodgson, a relative of Mr and Mrs Slone, said: "Paul's parents, who are there with him in Offenburg, report that he has had two major operations while in the coma and that he had just been able to recognise them, though as yet is unable to have a conversation."
Mrs Slone's body arrived back in Filey on Monday, just over a week after the tragic accident.
The couple's family have been told German police are investigating the collision, which is believed to have been caused by an oncoming vehicle on the wrong side of the road.
Preparations are now being made for Mrs Slone's funeral, which is being held at St Oswald's Church in Filey on Tuesday at 1pm.
Mr Hodgson said: "Through Gillian's love of dogs and beading the family have received condolences not just from all over England but from around the world, for which we are most grateful.
"Gillian has had many beading articles published in the UK and was highly respected world wide as a bead artist.
"Her final article will appear in the Bead & Button magazine in February 2010, and there is also one in this coming August's edition."
As a mark off respect Thorpe & Co Solicitors in Filey, where Mrs Slone worked as a probate clerk for the past six years, will be closed on the day of her funeral, and HairFlair, in Union Street, Filey, where her sister June Hodgson is a director, will be closed from noon.
Mrs Slone's family have requested family flowers only, but donations may be made at the church or by cheque to Thorpe & Co Solicitors, 12 Belle Vue Street, Filey, for the charities of her choice, which are The Dog's Trust, Filey Lifeboat, the Cinnamon Trust and Cancer Research.
Mr and Mrs Slone, of Wharfedale, were married for 21 years and as well as being keen motorists the couple enjoyed sailing.
They had a yacht in Scarborough harbour and were members of the Yacht Club.
