Thrills galore on Flamingo Land's new rollercoaster

THRILL-SEEKERS flocked to Flamingo Land, near Malton, to ride the world's steepest steel roller coaster on its opening day.

The 5 million ride, called Mumbo Jumbo, opened to the public on Saturday, and hundreds of people of all ages, who had travelled from as far as Belgium, queued in the heat to be among the first to try out the record-breaking ride...

Here’s what she thought ...

I have always been a fan of rollercoasters, but had not been on one for a long time so was feeling a bit nervous about stepping on to the steepest in the world.

The excitement had been building throughout the afternoon, with people cheering and clapping as the first brave riders got on board.

I could hear the riders screaming as they hurtled around the twists and turns above me and thought “What am I letting myself in for?”

But when I saw their beaming faces at the end of the ride I knew I had to have a go, so I took the plunge – literally!

The ride begins with a steep ascent followed by a curved, flat section which leads you straight into the record-breaking drop.

The inverse incline means you don’t just plummet down – you travel back underneath yourself and feel like the track has disappeared from under you.

This is followed by half a minute of non-stop twists and turns until you arrive – breathless and delighted – at the finish.

As I got off my legs were shaking and I could hardly speak, but the first thing I managed to get out was “It was brilliant – I want to go on again!”
