Three years and we still can’t go home

A SCARBOROUGH family are desperately waiting to return to their home after being forced out almost three years ago.
Last year the Evening News reported how Robert Gray and Janet Castledine had been told to leave their family home, off Dean Road, due to water problems under their property.
Now, 12 months down the line, work has yet to start on rebuilding part of their house which had to be demolished.
The couple, and their daughters Jade and Chloe, have now had to spend three Christmases in temporary accomodation after being moved from their four-bedroomed home to a two-bedroomed rented house.
Ms Castledine said: “I can’t believe we are still in the same position after another year has gone by. It is annoying that our lives have been turned upside down like this.
“It just feels like our house has been taken over. Sometimes we will call in and find engineers in the back garden. They don’t even tell us when they are going round.
“We have had very little communication from Yorkshire Water, and have been given no indication of timescales.
“We have no idea when we will be able to go home, even now.”
The family had to move out in May 2009 after Yorkshire Water engineers discovered a void under their kitchen where foundations were being washed away.
As a result the kitchen and bedroom at the back of the house had to be demolished, and the family were put into rented accommodation paid for by their insurers.
However, work to repair the damage hasn’t even started, due to what Yorkshire Water described as “legal technicalities”.
Matt Thompson, spokesperson for Yorkshire Water, said; “We have every empathy with the family and their situation, and continue to work closely with them and the other parties involved in this case, including their insurance company and the planning designers.
“Back in February last year, we carried out the necessary work required and up until the beginning of January we have been waiting for plans and other details to come through in order to take this forward.
“We now have these and are giving them the urgent attention they deserve.”
