Theatre work progressing well
WORK at Scarborough's new Open Air Theatre is progressing well despite recent bad weather.
Entertainment group Apollo Leisure has said a “worldwide superstar” will top the bill on the opening night of the revamped 3.5 million venue on Saturday July 24.
The following week Boy George will appear in an ‘80s Rewind concert with music legends including Midge Ure, Paul Young, Rick Astley and Nik Kershaw. The concert will feature Heaven 17, T’Pau, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Hazel O’Connor and Toyah.
Chris Bourne, Scarborough Council's projects manager, said the contractors had been on site for the past 21 weeks and the scheme was on schedule.
He said: "The precast concrete terrace units have now all been fixed in place and the first railings and green plastic seats are also in place. These units became available one month early on December 14, and the decision was taken to take advantage of this and start with an early installation on site.
“This decision has been justified because the time gained has meant that delays on other areas of the site caused by inclement weather have been absorbed and have had no impact upon the overall programme.”
He added that last month a planning application was granted for a permanent backstage building and it was now 50 per cent complete.
"The two Control Point buildings have now been erected and first fixed,” he said. “Internally the units are fully plastered and roof slates are currently being fixed. The construction programme is due to be completed on May 17 and progress on site is on target to meet this date.”
Mr Bourne said the performance stage has been put out for tender and he was pleased that three bids had been received which were under budget.
He added: “A preferred supplier has been identified following a tender analysis carried out jointly with Apollo and this supplier is in the process of being contracted.
"The contracted handover date to Apollo is July 30, therefore giving the council a programme 'float' of 10 weeks. In light of the current inclement snowy weather and forecast bad winter this float remains a prudent contingency."
Following discussions with Apollo, work to erect the stage will now not start until June and is due to be completed in mid-July to ensure it is not stood unused for a significant period of time.
