The Newby and Scalby Show revival 'a success'
A TRADITIONAL Scarborough village show has been revived after a 44-year absence.
The Newby and Scalby Produce Show, held in Scalby Parish Hall, attracted scores of entrants of all ages in a number of different categories.
Exhibits included vegetables, fruit, flowers, handicrafts, home-baked goods and jam.
Children's classes included fruit and vegetables, miniature gardens, computer art, a birthday card and a celebration cake.
Organisers were delighted with the response to the event, especially as it had only been in the final planning stages since last month.
Bob Kendall, show secretary, was at the last Newby and Scalby Show in 1964 when he was just seven-years-old.
He said: "We're really pleased with the response, especially from the Newby and Scalby allotment holders, whose categories have been tremendously well supported."
Mike McGuinn, parish clerk, said: "It's the first time I've been involved with the show and it's great to see that people are so keen."
Show chairman Peter Stabeley said: "We've had a great deal of help and support from Roger Burnett and Sheila Johnson from Scarborough Council's parks and countryside department."
Organisers would also like to thank local businesses who sponsored categories and donated trophies. They also received prizes of champagne and a food hamper from the town twinning committee in Pornic, France, which has been twinned with Newby and Scalby for 19 years.
Hayley Reynoldson, of Stepney Grove, was delighted that her son Thomas, five, won the Junior Gardener Trophy and two first prizes in vegetable categories.
She said: "We're really pleased for him. He's getting really interested in the whole process and did everything himself from planting through to watering and digging the vegetables up.
"He was so delighted to win – it's been really rewarding for him."
