Teenager crushed by horse

A TEENAGE girl is in intensive care with serious injuries after being crushed by her horse at a farm near Scarborough yesterday.

Sarah Beal was hunting with the Derwent Hunt at lunchtime when the horse reared, fell backwards and landed on her.

The 17-year-old, who is a member of the Derwent Hunt branch of the Pony Club, was treated by paramedics at the scene and then airlifted to York District Hospital.

Sarah, who works for the Scarborough Evening News, was taken into the operating theatre and treated for serious chest injuries. She was injured at her home Abbey Farm, Yedingham.

Her mother, Helen Beal, said: "Sarah loves riding and we were out hunting at the farm next to the house when the horse reared, threw Sarah to the ground and landed on top of her.

"It happened so quickly there was nothing she could have done to stop it from happening."

Sarah's parents are with her at the hospital, where Sarah is in intensive care and her condition is described as stable.

Derwent Hunt secretary Sarah Morley, who was riding with Sarah, saw the horse incident.

"It was a freak accident," she said. "She's been riding with the hunt since she was tiny. She competes all over and is a very good rider.

"This is one of those things that could happen to anyone. We are all thinking of her and wish her well. We just want Sarah back. Everyone is worried about her and is hoping she gets better soon. She's a lovely girl and we all like her very, very much."
