Sunflower contest reaches great height!

TWO Scarborough youngsters are walking tall after growing giant sunflowers.

Olivia Walker and Tyla-Jo Storey, both aged five, have each grown 9ft sunflowers and are proud of their efforts.

Olivia’s auntie Elizabeth Walker, of West Park Avenue in Newby, said she couldn’t believe how well they had done.

She said: ”They have grown them in a cup and when they got big enough we put them in tubs in my garden.

“They both really enjoy looking after them and the sunflowers have opened up into lovely colourful flowers.

“It is the first time they have grown one and they think it’s brilliant.”

However, the pair’s efforts were not enough to knock Indiya Barker-Dunwell and grandad John Dunwell, off the top of the sunflower chart.

They lead the race for Scarborough’s tallest sunflower after Indiya, three, helped her grandad grow an 11ft 6in sunflower at his Raleigh Street home.
