Students enter the dragons' den!

STUDENTS at Scarborough Sixth Form College have been pitching their money making ideas to a group of successful local business people in a Dragons Den style initiative.

The panel included Steve Bromham, managing director of information and technology company Save9, Paul Cross senior lecturer from the Scarborough Campus University of Hull, Mark Asquith managing director of Asquith & Co Accountants and urban renaissance manager Nick Taylor.

Head of Business Studies at the college Richard Cotterill said: "Following some preparatory work with Duncan Lewis an adivisor from Business Link, the students worked for about ten days on a business proposal that takes advantage of the town's infrastructure.

Although nerve wracking, the students made some superb, highly professional pitches. They were grilled by a ruthless panel of Dragons and Duncan Lewis and Nick Taylor were so impressed with some of the ideas that they would like to help the students pursue them and make them a reality.

The students hard work seems to be paying off with the business studies department has gaining an entry in the 2009 Good Schools Guide.

Mr Cotterill says the guide, provides objective assessments of the quality of education delivered by schools and colleges.

He said: "We are delighted at winning the awards. Both students and staff have worked extremely hard to achieve this success. We try to make our teaching and assessment as varied and interesting as possible."
