Story of turning movie into a blockbuster
THE story of the filming of Gone with the Wind is told in Moonlight and Magnolias, at the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
It lifts the lid on Hollywood excess and tells the story of what happened when production stopped, with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh twiddling their thumbs in their dressing rooms.
The film was haemorrhaging $50,000 a day when ace producer David Selznick ripped up the dud screenplay and started again, in a make-or-break career move.
He stole director Victor Fleming from The Wizard of Oz, enlisted writer Ben Hecht and knuckled down for a week of frantic pressure, fuelled with bananas and peanuts.
It was a race against time to transform a 1,048-page novel into a movie blockbuster.
Moonlight and Magnolias, by Ron Hutchinson, is set in 1939 and marks the directorial debut of the SJT's new artistic director, Chris Monks.
Chris says: "Everyone loves the movies. Everyone loves Hollywood gossip, but it's not a new addiction. Back in the 1930s, columnists like Hedda Hopper and Ed Sullivan syndicated juicy stories about the stars across the USA.
"Ron Hutchinson's screwball comedy will transport our audience back to the golden age of movie glamour: the stars, the costumes, the parties, the law suits," says Chris.
"Moonlight and Magnolias entertains, enlightens and reveals some of Hollywood's darkest secrets."
In the cast are Kieran Buckeridge, Clare Corbett, Pete Gallagher and John Killoran.
It runs until June 27.
