Store Wars: Big hope for cheaper fuel - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
MORE than 4,000 people have thrown their weight behind moves by Asda supermarket to take over council-owned land off Scarborough's Dean Road.
In an Evening News online poll, 86 per cent of respondents have supported the Leeds-based firm over rival Tesco, with many hoping the presence of a petrol station by either supermarket would drive down fuel prices in Scarborough.
Just 750 people - 15 per cent of respondents - said they would prefer Tesco's bid for the site to be successful.
The bids for the former St Mary's Hospital site and Dean Road depot were discussed behind closed doors at a full council meeting yesterday.
If successful, both chains plan to build a petrol station on the land.
At the moment, a lack of competition in Scarborough means residents are paying over-the-odds to fill up at the pump.
Many Scarborough residents already drive to Asda in York to fill up, where a litre of unleaded was yesterday priced at 110.9p.
A litre at Tesco in York was also significantly cheaper than any store in Scarborough costing 111.9p. At Morrisons in Eastfield yesterday, a litre of unleaded cost 114.9p per litre, while at the Middlesbrough branch, the price was just 110.9p. In Scarborough's Sainsbury's, a litre of unleaded was 116.9p.
One website commentator said: "About time there was a bit of competition with prices, let's have some cheap fuel."
Another added: "If we get what we all want we may even get some cheaper petrol."
However despite the support for the Asda bid, others were against the site being used for a supermarket altogether.
