Sports village could be complete by 2013 - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

A NEW multi-million pound sports village in Scarborough could be completed within three years.

Scarborough Council has put out a tender inviting private companies to apply to develop, design and construct new facilities at Weaponness coach park.

The sports village, which could cost up to 22million, would include a new football stadium and leisure centre.

The private company will pay for the development themselves, and in return the council are offering freeholds or leaseholds to up to four parcels of land including the former McCain Stadium in Seamer Road, Filey Road sports centre and sites at Weaponness and Ryndle Crescent, which could be used for new housing.

The deadline for private companies to express their interest is October 4. The council will then enter into a "competitive dialogue" with a shortlist of bidders.

The starting date of the development is put at August 2012, with the completion date earmarked for September 2013.

If the project is completed on schedule, football could return to Scarborough for the start of the 2014/15 season.

A spokesperson for the council said: "The council is pleased to announce that it has placed a notice with the Official Journal of the European Union and has formally started the procurement process to identify a preferred developer for the leisure village project in Scarborough, which includes the construction of a community football ground.

"The council does not have any capital monies to contribute to the project, so the council's contribution will be its land. In return for the construction of the facilities, the council could offer either the freehold or leasehold of up to four of its sites at Filey Road, Seamer Road, part of Weaponness and Ryndle Crescent to a developer for development of whatever suitable uses they can obtain through the formal planning process.

"However, the council reserves the right to withdraw a site or additionally request a capital receipt should there be a substantial imbalance between the cost or value of the completed leisure village and the ultimately developed sites."

Additional features of the development could include a 25 metre swimming pool.
