Spitfire display for group reunion
A SECOND World War Spitfire roared across Scarborough's South Bay and gave an impressive aerial display to onlookers and members of the Royal Observer Corps Association.
The association was holding its 18th annual reunion at the Hotel St Nicholas over the weekend. The 1945 aircraft was piloted by retired Air Marshall Clifford Spink on Saturday afternoon.
Mr Spink is the association’s president and had promised last year to carry out the flypast when he was asked by the then deputy mayor Cllr Bill Chatt.
John Sharpe, the national secretary, said the display was a great honour for the 170 members attending the reunion. He said: “It’s a fairly unique occasion for him to do that for us. He has covered all of the costs.”
Scarborough’s mayor, Cllr Janet Jefferson, as well as Cllr Chatt joined the guests for the reunion meal on Saturday night at the Hotel St Nicholas.
Members of the Royal Observer Corps acted as lookouts, especially on the coast, for enemy planes and shipping movements during the war.
