Song and lance at Scarborough Castle Medieval event: PICTURES

DAYS of old when knights were bold came to Scarborough Castle at the weekend.

Knights and knaves from the Lion Rampant recreation group were "joust" the ticket for the event, bringing their archery, sword fighting and musical skills to the castle's medieval pageant.

The group's Sir John Chandos, better known to his friends as Ken Polton, said: "We set up the group nearly 25 years ago, in fact next April is our 25th anniversary. At the time, re-enactments were mainly done by people who were mainly into the armour and the fighting. We wanted to create more of a theatrical performance.

"Indeed a lot of us met through a performance of the play The Lion in Winter and that gave us the taste for it.

"We decided to create a crowd-orientated entertainment for the 20th century. What unites us really is friendship and trust – if you're going to be whacked by somebody with one of our swords, which are pretty hefty, you really do have to trust them!"

As well as watching displays, audience members also got the chance to try their hand at archery and to have a go at medieval dancing.

Alison Wagstaff and Emily Reed had made the journey from Leeds, especially for the pageant. "We're members of English Heritage so we thought we'd make the trip over for a day out," Emily said. "It's been fantastic – it's nice to see everyone in their colourful costumes, it really makes you feel that you're there.

"I like the swordfighting best, it was very exciting."
