Society's exhibition in honour of engineer

THE work of a man who helped shaped Scarborough has been celebrated with an exhibition at the Town Hall in St Nicholas Street.

Former borough engineer Harry W Smith helped mastermind some of the town's most celebrated parks and buildings – as well as Marine Drive.

"A lot of what we take for granted in Scarborough was done by Harry W Smith," said chairman of Scarborough and District Civic Society Adrian Perry.

"He was behind North-stead Manor Gardens, Alexandra Gardens, Peas-holm Park and the Mere," said Mr Perry.

"One of the first things he did was convert the Woodall home into the Town Hall, adding on the council chamber which is why the Town Hall was the ideal location for the exhibition. He blended the two perfectly," he said.

More than 150 people visited the exhibition which was organised by the civic society as part of Civic Society Week. It ends today with an unveiling of a plaque at Woodend Creative Workspace to celebrate the aristocratic literary Sitwell family whose home it was.

There will also be an exhibition and poetry readings celebrating the life and work of the Sitwells.

Scarborough and District Civic Society meets on the second Tuesday of every month at Scarborough Library in Vernon Road. The next meeting is on July 14 at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Eastern Area Commander Chief Superintendent Javad Ali.

Non-members are welcome.
