Soaking up the fun at 'Dalbyology'

THE rain failed to spoil the fun at the first "Dalbyology" event which attracted more than 100 people.

The Friends of Dalby Forest teamed up with the Forestry Commission to stage the family fun day at Staindale near Pickering.

There were a variety of displays and activities going on based on different “ologies” including, geology (rocks), orthinology (birds), mycology (fungi) and ichnology (dinosaur footprints).

BBC television science and nature presenter Dr Janet Sumner spoke about volcanology and built her own exploding Krakatoa.

Visitors enjoyed wildlife walks, butterfly treks, stream dipping and fun outdoor games.

Environment officer for the forestry commission, Brian Walker, said: “It was unfortunate that there was heavy rain but it did not dampen peoples’ spirits.

“There was so much going on and everyone seemed to have a great time.

“This was the first Dalbyology event and the Friends of Dalby Forest did a great job.”

Other organisations which took part included, Scarborough Field Naturalists, Scarborough Museums Trust, the Rotunda Geology Group, Yorkshire Butterfly Conservation. Helmsley Archaeological and Historical Society, National Trust, Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society, North York Moors National park and the North Riding Badger Group.
