Six bid to build new sport village
SIX private companies are vying for the chance to develop the proposed new sports village in Scarborough.
There were 11 initial expressions of interest after Scarborough Council placed a notice in the Official Journal of the European Union in September to mark the start of the process to identify the preferred developer for the scheme, which will be built in Weaponness Coach Park and could cost up to £22 million.
The number of bidders have now been whittled down to six, each of which will now submit outline proposals, and from these a shortlist of three applicants will be invited to submit detailed resolutions and final tenders.
John Riby, Scarborough Council’s head of technical services, said: “As expected by a project of this size, importance and significance, a substantial amount of interest was generated and requests for further information received. At the close of the due deadline, 10 completed applications were received from companies seeking to be included on the list.” A series of criteria for financial assessment, public indemnity, employers liability and professional indemnity, and technical capability was used to decide which candidates should go forward to the next stage.
The plan could free up areas of council-owned land and provide top class facilities where sports stars of the future can train.
Features may include a 25m competition swimming pool, a sports hall, outdoor pitches to meet required standards for football clubs along with community, health and education facilities.
The whole project is expected to take three years to complete and will lead to football returning to Scarborough.
The leisure village is central to plans to build 150 homes as part of a scheme involving three prominent Scarborough sites.
The homes are likely to be split between the old McCain Stadium site in Seamer Road and the Filey Road sports centre site.
Meanwhile, demolition work on the former home of Scarborough FC is set to begin within weeks.
The Evening News revealed in October that the council had put out a tender to level the Athletic Ground in Seamer Road.
The main stand, clubhouse and shed stand will be the first to go. The other stands may be moved to the new sports village or demolished at a later date.
Since the stadium became derelict in 2007, it has become a target of trespassers and vandals. As a result the council, which bought the ground in 2008, took the decision to demolish parts of the historic stadium, where football was first played in 1898.

That was to take 2 years to build in 1995 !!!!!!. So nobody should hold their breath in anything starting soon on the new sports village in Scarborough .

This would be more than twice the proposed ground at the new Sports Village! Who will be responsible for this extra-development costs? There are, 'more questions than answers' in this entire project me thinks SBC!

Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 01:36 PMWhile I welcome this news, particularily the news about a new football ground for a Scarborough semi-pro' side to be based, this replacement ground, for the grade A McCain Stadium, according to the SBC's own documents will, when you detach it from the spec' details of the remaining Sports Village build, only be a Grade C stadium and therefore capable of only holding1,950 spectators at most. To put this into context, that's one-third less than Brid's current ground-even though this itself does need re-grading by the FA. I don't think most of the Scarborough fans understand this devalued replacement we are being presented with by our elected Town Councillors. I'm not prepared to say anything else at this moment other than ask for others opinions on this paltry replacement.
