Sick ellie's surprise treat
A SCARBOROUGH girl, who is battling cancer, got a huge surprise when a bright pink Cadillac rolled up to take her to her 12th birthday party.
Ellie Othick-Bowmaker has been having radiotherapy and chemotherapy since a seven and a half hour operation for a brian tumour.
Her mum, Heather, said: “A man volunteered to drive the Cadillac from Sheffield for Ellie. He only asked for the petrol which was paid for by my sister Moira and people she works with in York.
“Ellie’s birthday party was held at Scalby Parish Hall and everyone wore 1950s-style fancy dress like in the film Grease. There was also a chocolate fountain and hot dogs so it was a nice party.
“She got a real shock when the Cadillac rolled up outside our home in Pinfold Close. The look on her face was great.”
Local people rallied this summer to raise 4,000 so Ellie could go on holiday to Disneyland Paris later this year. Mrs Othick said: “Everybody in Scarborough has been fantastic. Her father Paul has raised some money separately in Newcastle where he lives. We are using the rest of the money for one or two other treats for Ellie. We have taken her to London to see the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins musicals. Ellie has also been on the London Eye and been to Madame Tussaud’s.
“We are using some of the fund which has been raised to pay for reflexology for Ellie on a weekly basis.”
On Saturday Sally Hepworth, of Station Lane, Cloughton, held a coffee morning to raise money for Ellie’s Fund.
Mrs Hepworth is a friend of Ellie’s grandparents Pat and Peter Padlow and the event raised 560. Mrs Hepworth said: “We would like to thank all those who helped, contributed and attended.
“Ellie’s grandparents are devastated by her illness and as their friends we wanted to raise funds to enable Ellie and her brother and sister to have some special treats and if necessary help with expenses incurred with taking Ellie backward and forwards to Leeds for treatment.”
