Setting scenes for church anniversary

VOLUNTEERS have been hard at work preparing for a pageant to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Westborough Methodist Church.
The special events are due to be held over the second weekend in March and Maggie Bridge, the pageant’s producer, said work was progressing well.
She added: “Two groups of volunteers who meet during the week at Westborough have been working hard to create a set to be placed within the church.
“One group, who are familiarly known as Workers’ Playtime and who do a variety of joinery tasks throughout the church, have also been constructing the scenery using hessian donated by Boyes with a timber framework.
“Another group has been painting the scenery depicting the historic interior of the church as well as scenes of Scarborough.”
She said that there would be a cast of 40 actors, as well as singers and dancers, and the whole arena in Westborough would be used for the pageant.
“A number of people from Westborough contributed towards the compilation of the pageant.
“The ideas came from John Stafford along with some material researched from the book written by Joan Bayes entitled One More Step,” she added.
“Although the church is celebrating 150 years as a building and a body of Christian people, the pageant goes back even further to the days of John Wesley in the 1700s, when Scarborough was an important town for fishing.
“The annual fish fair took place on the foreshore and the ballad of that name features in the pageant.”
John Wesley visited Scarborough on his horse a total of 14 times and his visits are commemorated on a plaque in Church Stairs Street, below St Mary’s Church – the Heritage Trail sign marks the site of the first Wesleyan chapel built in Scarborough.
l The pageant will take place on Friday, March 9, in the church from 7pm and free tickets are from the coffee bar which is open from Tuesday to Saturday.
