'Secret' meeting explained by health chiefs
HEALTH chiefs behind Scarborough's new "super surgery" have explained why decisions about who will run the clinic were made in "secret".
The matter was discussed in a private section of NHS North Yorkshire and York's board meeting which took place 50 miles from Scarborough in Easingwold on Tuesday.
A public announcement about which bid was successful is expected to be made shortly.
The new centre could be located in the former Scar-borough Building Society offices in York Place, just off Westborough and opposite Deben-hams.
It could take a variety of patients on a range of health issues, including drug, alcohol and sexual health problems, and other medical matters.
The Evening News understands there are two parties bidding to run the new centre: one is a link-up between Dr Douglas Moederle-Lumb and the primary care trust, and the other is a consortium of Scarborough GPs in collaboration with high street store Boots.
Dr Moederle-Lumb has submitted a planning application to use the former building society HQ.
Jane Marshall, director of commissioning and service development for the NHS North Yorkshire and York primary care trust, said: "Due to commercial sensitivities the decision had to be taken in the private section of the board meeting.
"Once the bidders have been informed of the decision and a legally required 'cooling off' period has elapsed we will then make a formal public announcement.
"Once that announcement has been made we will be working with the successful bidder to ensure the services are available to the local community as soon as possible. Our aim is for some services to begin operating by the beginning of May 2009.
"This project puts significant additional investment into Scarborough and will provide extra services that are known to be needed in the area. It is important to stress this will provide additional services and will not replace the existing high quality services which are currently provided in the Scarborough area."
