Scottish sporting mission for Boro directors and council officials - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

SCARBOROUGH is looking north of the border for advice on its new sports facilities.

Club officials from Scarborough Athletic FC, councillors and council officers have been on a fact-finding mission to Scotland to check out the state-of-the-art artificial pitches at Celtic's training ground.

The council is, for commercial reasons, considering using an artificial surface for the planned new community sports facilities which could be built in Scarborough, with the former Weaponness Valley coach site as the current favoured location.

Athletic are considering basing themselves at the new ground. However, they have to be sure the surface meets FA regulations.

The fake fields have found a fan in Athletic's chairman Simon Cope.

He told the Evening News: "We just wanted to get some idea of the way Celtic use their artificial pitches, they've got several outdoors and an indoor surface. As it happened when we arrived it was absolutely bucketing it down, the sort of downpour that would have caused a postponement on a grass pitch, and the water drained away really quickly. It was very impressive."

The Scarborough party – Mr Cope and football director Tony Brown from Athletic, council cabinet members David Jeffels and John Blackburn, the authority's strategic director Hilary Jones and Brian Bennett, head of leisure and tourism – also met with an expert on artificial surfaces and the architect who carried out the feasibility study on the Weaponess site.

Mr Cope said: "It's safe to say that the jury is still out on the natural versus artificial turf debate for the main playing surface, but it's important that all the stakeholders involved fully explore the options available to them."
