Scarborough sports village plans welcomed COMMENT ON THIS STORY
PLANS for a new sports village in the town which include a stadium for Scarborough Athletic FC have received a boost.
Messages of support have been posted online on the unofficial fans' forum, the Surfing Seadog, and people are growing excited about the possibility they could be moving into a new ground within five years.
Approval for Scarborough Council's plans to build a new sports village on the site of the former Weaponness Valley Coach Park is strong, after a decision to ditch the McCain Stadium in Seamer Road as an option was made public this week.
Plans drawn up by architects G5 form part of a feasibility study by Scarborough Council for the Weaponness Valley site. They show the possible future of football in Scarborough – and they've got Seadogs salivating!
James Hunter is Scarborough Athletic FC communications director and co-ordinator of Back2Boro – the campaign to bring the club, which currently plays its home games in Bridlington, back to town.
He said: "Drawing a line under the possible use of the Athletic Ground has given us all a focus on working alongside the council to achieve its aim of providing a top class sustainable facility at Weaponness.
"Although drawn up some time ago, if the finished article looks anything like the original feasibility study drawings then we certainly have a lot to look forward to – not just the club itself, but the town as a whole.
"The Back2Boro scheme is raising awareness of the club's need to get home, but we are also very aware of the continuing sporting needs of the town, and look forward to working alongside others in support of the council's plans in the New Year."
As well as providing a new home for Athletic, the sports village will also house other sections of the borough's sports facilities, retail space, and possibly a business park and accommodation.
