Scarborough sports and homes plan to 'take up to five years' - COMMENT ON THIS STORY
SCARBOROUGH Council leader Tom Fox has insisted plans to build a new sports village and 150 new homes have a timescale of up to five years.
Plans detailed in the council's Draft Housing Allocations Plan Document suggested the scheme would take five to 10 years to complete, but Cllr Fox says this was an error which has been amended in the final document.
The project proposes the 150 homes would be split between the old McCain Stadium site in Seamer Road and the Filey Road Sports Centre site, with new sports facilities to be built at Weaponness Valley coach park.
The sports village would include a public sports centre and football club along with other features.
Cllr Fox told the Evening News: "By the end of the month the council is organising a workshop with some key parties to identify those who want to commit to this project and to agree an action plan.
"The invitees will include all secondary schools, Yorkshire Coast College, the university, the acute health trust, the PCT, the rugby club, Scarborough Cricket Club and Sport England."
He added: "In addition, myself, the council's chief executive Jim Dillon and strategic director Hilary Jones will be having a meeting with acting chairman of Scarborough Athletic, Tony Brown, on November 23 to fully appraise and update them as to the way forward and to consider any views they have.
"Scarborough Athletic and Scarborough Town haven't been invited to the first meeting because it is for potential funders. But out of this meeting we will be organising the next stage of the consultation with all relevant sports clubs and interested parties – and Scarborough Athletic and Scarbor-ough Town feature highly on this list."
The council plans to sell off the former home of Scarborough FC, which it bought from administrators Begbies Traynor for 1.335 million last year, to developers.
Engineers found it would cost 1 million to return the stadium, which has been derelict and suffered extensive vandalism since the club folded in summer 2007, to an acceptable standard.
The sports centre in Filey Road, which was established in 1974, occupies a prime site for housing.
