Scarborough retailers' mixed reaction to cut in VAT - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

SCARBOROUGH retailers have given mixed reactions to yesterday's mini-budget announcement by the Chancellor Alistair Darling.

The reduction in VAT from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent, which comes into effect next Monday until December 2009 did not convince retailers that it was enough to boost Christmas spending.

Bev Nunns, manager at Scarborough's Matalan store, said: "It will mean people have that little bit more money to play with over Christmas.

"But I couldn't comment on how it might effect the shops. We will have to wait and see."

However licensees feel that the Chancellor's plans to partially fund the tax reduction by increasing duty on alcohol, tobacco and fuel will further damage their businesses.

Mr Darling did not announce any figures but signalled future increases.
