SCARBOROUGH TEENAGER SUFFERS DOUBLE STROKE

A SCARBOROUGH teenager has suffered two severe strokes at the age of just 15.

Talented footballer Luke Wilson was taken to Scarborough Hospital after being taken ill at school but, within hours, his condition had deteriorated. It is rare for anyone of such a young age to suffer a stroke.

The critically-ill youngster, who stopped breathing at one stage, was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary's intensive care unit where his parents waited anxiously by his bedside.

It was there Luke finally came around, and, amazingly, regaining full movement across his body. Some stroke patients can take months or years to recover even part of their movement.

His relieved mum, Debbie Storry, of Eastfield, said: "We are so relieved Luke has made such a good recovery.

We were very worried. "You just don't expect a 15-year-old to suffer something like this."

She said: "At school they had said that he didn't look right so we brought him home. Then we noticed that the right side of his face had dropped. When we told the doctor what had happened he came right away, within just two or three minutes. He then phoned an ambulance almost immediately."

Luke, who can now see visitors, is recovering on Ward 48a and feels much better, despite undergoing such an astonishing ordeal. Doctors are now awaiting further test results which should indicate what caused the stroke.

Miss Storry added: "Luke is coping brilliantly. He has a smile on his face all the time." She thanked Doctor Shaikh, at Eastfield Surgery, the doctors and medical staff at Scarborough hospital for their quick response and the care they showed throughout.

The popular teenager's family, which include brothers, Kyle, 17, and Jake, 12, are now looking forward to his return home. They also hope Luke will be back in his favourite football position of central midfield after a long rest.

The teenager, who has been a member of The Eastfield Sports Association JFC under 15s for eight years, is well liked by colleagues.

His coach Warren Foster, said: "I'm made up that he is getting better. It's great news. The whole team were devastated to hear what had happened."

The team had won the league just days before Luke was admitted to hospital. Mr Foster said Luke was an especially strong player and would always look out for his team mates.

He said: "He is the one player I argue with the most – but that is because he always stands up for his team. It's never about him, it's always about the rest of the team."

Hugh Bellamy, Headteacher at George Pindar Community Sports College, described what had happened to Luke as "a huge shock".

He said: "We are all very encouraged that he appears to be making a very positive recovery and our thoughts are with him and his family."
