Scarborough taxi driver becomes trapped sheep 'samaritan'

A SCARBOROUGH taxi driver stopped his car and rescued a sheep after he noticed it was trapped.

Eric Hallett, 63, who works for Atlas Private Hire, was driving towards West Ayton at 1.30pm when he spotted the stricken animal in a nearby field. He said the weather was very windy at the time and he felt that the animal would have died if he had not stepped in.

"It was stuck in a hayrack, its head was wedged between the hay and the rails, it was kicking its legs trying to get out. I just tried to free it but it wasn't easy. It was a struggle because it was a deadweight," he said.

Mr Hallett said the animal had also fallen onto its side and was unable to get upright. He said: "It just trotted off, it was quite happy, it could've died when you consider the position it was in."

Mr Hallett, who has worked as a taxi driver for the past seven years, said that his colleagues had joked about the incident when he returned to work and that he was now known as "The Shepherd".
