Scarborough's North Bay water park 'is priority' - COMMENT ON THIS STORY

PLANS for a new water park, four-star hotel and restaurant to complete the rejuvenation of Scarborough's North Bay are back on the agenda.

Scarborough Council leader Tom Fox updated members on the 140 million scheme at Monday's meeting of the full council.

He said discussions were ongoing with developer Roland Duce, who bought out Benchmark Leisure, which for years has been the council's private sector partner in the project.

Cllr Fox said: "An established restaurant operator is interested in leasing two of the units."

He said the council was still in negotiations over the Atlantis site with a major four-star hotel operator and a German-based company over the construction of the water park, which is cited as a priority.

He added the authority's existing contract with Benchmark expires in June next year and a report would be presented to the council by November on whether to extend the agreement or not.

Previously, there were negotiations by Benchmark for a 110-bedroom hotel on the site.

Cllr Fox also confirmed progress was underway on plans for a new sports village in Scarborough which will bring football back to the town.

The authority has put out a tender inviting private companies to apply to develop, design and construct new facilities at Weaponness coach park as part of the development, which could cost up to 22 million and would include a new football stadium and leisure centre.

Cllr Fox said: "The good news is this project is well and truly kicked off.

"We are sharing project plans with Scarborough Athletic and October 4 is the closing date for first expressions of interest."

The starting date of the development is scheduled for August 2012, with a completion date of September 2013.
